Dosage/Dosage form

Oral: 60 to 120 mg 3 times/day, up to 180 mg 3 times/day if needed.

Therapeutic uses

For the treatment of non-insulin dependent-diabetes mellitus in conjunction with diet and exercise.

Adverse effects/Side effects

Upper respiratory tract infection; Dizziness; bronchitis; back pain; arthropathy; hypoglycaemia; flu-like symptoms; cough; accidental trauma; diarrhoea.

Interaction

  • Increased levels/effects with enzyme inhibitors (e.g. fluconazole).
  • Increased hypoglycaemic effects with salicylates, MAOIs, nonselective β-blockers, alcohol, NSAIDs.
  • Decreased levels/effects with enzyme inducers (e.g. rifampicin).
  • Hypoglycaemic effects decreased with thiazide corticosteroids, diuretics, sympathomimetic agents and thyroid products.
  • Absorption delayed with food. Hypoglycaemic effects may be increased with alfalfa, aloe, bilberry, bitter melon, burdock, celery, damiana, fenugreek, garcinia, garlic, ginger, American ginseng, gymnema, marshmallow and stinging nettle.
  • Levels/effects may be reduced with St. John's wort.

Contraindications

Diabetic ketoacidosis; IDDM. Lactation.
