The center recently treated a rare case of stroke in a 3 year old baby. Brought into emergency, the child was first attended to by a stroke specialist. However, considering the rarity of stroke detection in such a small child, a paediatric neurologist and epileptologist was consulted, who confirmed signs of early stroke.
MRI tests confirmed stroke. Further to the treatment, it was found that the child had a heart infection which led to growth of vegetation on the heart valves which got carried in the blood; in her case one of these vegetations broke off and reached brain, resulting in a stroke.
After a neurointervention procedure and a recovery period of 90 plus days, the child is today healthy and happy.
Commenting on the rarity of the case, Dr Manish Shrivastava, head- interventional neuroradiology, said, “Stroke procedures in our country are much below global standards, this is more so in the case of children since the symptoms are much harder to spot and they are not able to articulate their problems as well as adults. The reason we were able to detect this case faster was because of the stroke treatment protocols followed at the hospital and the collaboration of a team of specialists. We monitored the patient’s recovery for more than three months to ensure the recovery was complete.”
The clinic of brain and spine is now looking at this case as a case study in stroke treatment for kids and all specialists are being sensitized to the symptoms and protocols of stroke detection in children.
