1.0 PURPOSE:
To describe a standard operating procedure for operation of steam boiler.
2.0 SCOPE:
The standard operating procedure describes in detail the method of operation of boiler.
3.0 RESPONSIBILITY:
The responsibility of operating the steam boiler as well as generation of steam lies with the staff of rank not lower than the boiler operator
The responsibility of preparing, reviewing and approving the standard operating procedure lies with the Manager - Maintenance, Head of Production and Head of QAD respectively.
4.0 METHOD:
4.1 Feed soft water from an overhead tank to boiler using multistage boiler feed pump. The quality of the water (Hardness < 5ppm and pH around 8.5) is maintained through soft water system.
4.2 The raw coal is broken into pieces around 50 mm dia size.
4.3 The coal is shifted to the boiler house by trolley and stored.
4.4 Coal is fed into the boiler grate manually through showel to maintain the boiler steam pressure around 7.5 kg/cm2 and record the same in annexure-I for every half an hour.
4.5 Generated steam is distributed through the main steam line to the various equipments in the plant
4.6 From mainline to all blocks, steam is supplied in reduced pressure (3.5 kg/cm2) using pressure reducing valve.
4.7 Remove the ash from the grate and feed coal depending upon the steam pressure in the boiler.
4.8 Ensure that the safety valves lift at set pressures (one at 8 kg/cm2 and another at 8.3 kg/cm2).
4.9 Ensure that the water level is maintained at desired level (3/4th of the gauge glass) by setting the mobery control switch.
4.10 Carry out the blow-down of Boiler, gauge glass and mobery once in every 8 hours and record the time when the blow-down was carried out in annexure-I.
4.11 Remove ash which was accumulated in cyclone separator once in three days.
5.0 RECORDING:
The responsibility of recording the various parameters in the log book lies with staff of rank not lower than the boiler operator.
