1.0 PURPOSE:
To describe a standard operating procedure for replacement of spares of mechanical seal unit of reactors.
2.0 SCOPE:
The standard operating procedure describes in detail the method of replacing spares of mechanical seal unit of reactors in the plant.
3.0 RESPONSIBILITY:
The responsibility of replacing the spares of mechanical seal unit of reactors lies with the staff of rank not lower than supervisor of maintenance department.
The responsibility of preparing, reviewing and approving the standard operating procedure lies with the Manager - Maintenance, Head of Production and Head of QAD respectively.
4.0 METHOD:
4.1 Isolate the equipment electrically.
4.2 Remove the motor, gear box, shaft coupling, bearing housing and drive shell from the reactor.
4.3 Unlock the mechanical seal unit from the reactor shaft and take out from the shaft.
4.4 Dismantle the mechanical seal unit.
4.5 Check springs, 'O' rings and both the mating surfaces (Stationary and rotary parts) of the seal unit. Replace the 'O' rings and springs if they are found deformed.
4.6 Replace the mating surfaces if they are found damaged and assemble the seal unit.
4.7 Fix the mechanical seal unit to the shaft of reactor.
4.8 Assemble the gear box stand, bearing housing. Rotate the shaft manually to check whether the shaft is freely rotating.
4.9 Test the mechanical seal for leakages at the desired pressure level. If the seal is leaking repeat the steps 4.2 to 4.8.
4.10 If the seal does not leak assemble the motor and gear box. Restore the power supply to the equipment.
4.11 Switch-on the reactor and check for any leakages through mechanical seal unit. If found leaking repeat the steps 4.2 to 4.10 till the seal does not leak.
4.12 Record the replacement details in the equipment history card.
5.0 RECORDING:
The responsibility of recording the replacement of spares of mechanical seal unit in the equipment history card as per the SOP lies with the staff of rank not lower than maintenance supervisor.
