1.0    OBJECTIVE  :

To lay down a procedure for disposal of microbial culture media. 

2.0    SCOPE  :

This SOP is applicable to disposal of microbial culture media in Microbiology laboratory.

3.0    RESPONSIBILITY :

QC-Microbiologist

4.0    PROCEDURE :

4.1    For culture media tubes/flasks/plates/pipettes: 

4.1.1    Autoclave the media tubes/ flasks/plates/pipettes at 121ºC for 30 minutes at 15 lbs. pressure.

4.1.2    Allow the temperature to cool to 90ºC and collect the contents of the tubes/ flasks/plates/pipettes into the LDPE bag and send it to effluent treatment plant for further distillation. 

4.1.3    Soak  the empty, test tubes, pipettes , petri¬ plates for 1 hour in 2.5% Savlon solutions.

4.1.4    Wash thoroughly under running tap water. Rinse with purified water and dry.

4.3    For used pipettes: 

4.3.1    Soak the used pipettes in 2.5% Savlon solution for minimum 1 hour. 

4.3.2    Wash thoroughly with plenty of tap water & then in purified water and dry.
