handling of Microbial culture Media spillage

1.0    OBJECTIVE  :

To lay down the procedure for handling of Microbial culture / Media spillage

2.0    SCOPE  :

This SOP is applicable to handling of Microbial culture / Media spillage used in Microbiology laboratory.

3.0    RESPONSIBILITY :

Microbiologist : To perform the procedure as per SOP.

Head – Quality Control : To ensure the compliance of the SOP.

4.0    PROCEDURE :

4.1    Use  2.5% Savlon solution /filtered 70% Isopropyl alcohol

Solution to Disinfect the spillage.

4.2    Wear hand gloves and spray /pour the Disinfectant solution on the spilled medium/spilled culture.

4.3    If glassware is broken, pick up the broken glassware pieces. Soak the broken

glassware pieces in Disinfectant solution overnight. Transfer the broken

glassware pieces to the container meant for collection of broken glassware.

4.4    Swab the area of spillage to remove traces of medium / microbial culture usingA sterile non-shedding duster soaked in disinfectant solution.

4.5    Wipe clean the area of spillage with a sterile non-shedding duster soaked inDisinfectant solution.

4.6    In case of spillage of medium / microbial culture on LAF bench, clean the

Spillage with a sterile non-shedding duster soaked in Disinfectant solution.

Switch on the UV light for one hour before start of any activity in LAF unit.
