Description

1.0              PURPOSE:

                    1.1    To lay down the procedure for handling of spillage in laboratory.

2.0              SCOPE:

                   2.1     This SOP is applicable for Quality control department.

3.0              RESPONSIBILITY:

                   3.1      Assistant – Quality Control

4.0ACCOUNTABILITY:

                    4.1    Executive – Quality Control                               

5.0       PROCEDURE:

5.1While spillage occurs in chemical or instrument lab, everybody shall be aware of the spillage and wear goggles, nose mask and hand gloves as precautionary measures.

5.2Neutralize the spillage area based on neutralizers with acids and bases with acids following:

Acids

  1. All strong acids like sulphuric acid, hydrochloric     acid, nitric acids are neutralised with soda ash.
  2. All weak acids like perchloric acid, acetic acids are   neutralised with sodium bi carbonate.

2.

Bases

  1.  All bases like sodium hydroxide, potassium         hydroxide are initially neutralised with water,    after water  neutralisation neutralised with dilute    acid olution.
  2.  Ammonia solution neutralised with dilute sulphuric    acid


5.3 Finally clean the area with water and mop with dry cloth.

5.4 In case of solid spillage, remove the solid with hand by using gloves and place in dustbin.

5.5 Finally clean the area with water and mop with dry cloth.
