Description


I.     PURPOSE :
       To provide a procedure for operation of Kipp’s Apparatus.

 II.    SCOPE :
        This procedure is applicable for the Kipp’s apparatus used in the Quality Control  department 

III.    RESPONSIBILITY :
        It is the responsibility of the Quality Control personnel involved in the generation of   Hydrogen sulfide gas using Kipp’s apparatus to follow         the procedure as mentioned  in this Standard Operating Procedure.

V.        PROCEDURE :
1.0      PRELIMINARY CHECK :

1.1      Check that the instrument and surroundings are clean, if not, clean with a soft cloth duster.

2.0 BASIC OPERATION : 

2.1      Take about 200 gm of ferrous sulfide at the bottom of Kipp’s apparatus.
2.2    Add grease at every joint in the apparatus. Add small amount of water in U type    vent to     prevent the leakage of gas. 
2.1.     Open the 'U' type vent and add about 50 ml HCl and 50 ml water. Fix the vent after adding HCl and water.
2.2.     Whenever H2S is required, open the outlet valve of the apparatus.
2.3.     Whenever the gas production stops, add about 50 ml of HCl.
2.4.     After addition of HCl if the Hydrogen sulfide gas production is not produced  discard the contents and prepare fresh as mentioned above.  
2.5.    After the usage close the gas outlet valve and dip the tube into a container containing water.               

PRECUATIONS:

3.1    Do not expose to H2 S gas continuously more than  1 minutes

3.2    Operate under the fuming cupboard only.
