Description

  1. INTRODUCTION:

In statements on solubility in the section headed characters, the terms used have the following significance referred to a temperature between 15°C and 25°C.

Statements given under the side heading such as "solubility in ethanol" express exact requirements and constitute part of the standards for the substances under which they occur.

  1. PROCEDURE:
  1. Unless otherwise specified, for every descriptive term used for solubility in the

specification, weigh the quantity of the material specified in the below table and

       transfer to the container.

2.   Add the quantity of solvent indicated and shake well.

3.   Note down the observation in the Record of analysis.

The approximate solubilities are indicated by the descriptive terms in the       accompanying table.

Descriptive Term

Parts of Solvent required for 1 part of solute

Example

  1.

Very Soluble

Less than 1

1g of sample in less than 1mL of solvent

  1.

Freely Soluble

From 1 to 10

1g of sample in1 to 10mL of solvent

  1.

Soluble

From 10 to 30

1g of sample in 10 to 30mL of solvent

  1.

Sparingly Soluble

From 30 to 100

1g of sample in 30 to 100mL of solvent

  1.

Slightly soluble

From 100 to 1000

0.1g of sample in 10 to 100mL of solvent

  1.

Very slightly soluble

From 1000 to 10000

10 mg of sample in 10 to 100mL of solvent

  1.

Practically insoluble, or Insoluble

Greater than or equal to 10000

10 mg of sample in 100mL of solvent

5. Miscibility of solute to be checked in all proportions with the stated solvent.

6. The term “Partly soluble” is descriptive term of mixture where only some of the

components dissolve.
