I. PURPOSE :
To provide a procedure to operate and maintain the Sartorius make GE812platform Balance.
II. SCOPE:
This Standard Operating Procedure is applicable to the GE812 platform Balance used in the Cytotoxic Quality Control
III. RESPONSIBILITY:
It is the responsibility of the Quality Control personnel to calibrate the GE812 platform Balance being used as per the procedure and schedule given in this Standard Operating Procedure.
IV. DOCUMENT REFERENCE:
SOPs : Core Procedure : Calibration of Equipment
Forms : Platform balance Calibration Record
V. OPERATION
1.0 PRELIMINARY CHECK:
1.1 Check and ensure that the balance is clean and suitable for use. If it is not, using a soft cloth on the outside and use a soft brush for cleaning the pan and its surroundings.
1.2 Ensure that the balance is placed in an area, which is free from vibrations.
1.4 Ensure that the container total weight will not exceed the max.loading weight of the
balance.
1.5 Before weighing, bring the temperature of the material to be weighed, to the room
temperature.
1.6 Display the maximum and minimum weights can be weighed at the balance.
2.0 BASIC OPERATION :
2.1 Before using the balance check whether the balance is calibrated or not.
2.2 If not calibrate it and if it passes in the calibration, use it.
2.3 Check for the cleanliness of the balance pan.
2.4 Switch on the balance and allow it to stabilise for 20 minutes.
2.5 Do not place any cool or hot substance on the pan.
Simple Weighing:
2.6 Turn on the balance/scale: Press
2.7 Self-test is performed will be displayed
2.8 Place the sample to be weighed on the balance pan.
2.7 Wait until the reading gets stabilized.
2.8 Note down the reading shown.
Tare facility Utilisation:
2.9 Place the container on the balance pan, the weight will be displayed.
2.10 To tare the balance/scale: Press
2.11 Place the sample to be weighed on the container. The net weight will be displayed. After weighing remove the container from the balance.
2.12 The tare weight will be shown as a negative value. The tare weight remains stored until the switch is pressed or the balance is switched off. Weighing procedure (For solids)
2.13 Place a clean butter paper on the balance pan. Tare the weight to zero.
2.14 To toggle the display between the 1st and 2nd weight units: Press the key
2.15 Carefully add the sample being weighed approximately to the nearest mg /gm. Wait until the reading gets stabilized.
2.16 Carefully transfer the contents to the specified glassware, taking care not to wet the paper or spill any of the weighed powder.
Note : Before transferring the contents, ensure that the inner neck of the glassware is dry.
2.18 Clean the balance for any powder spillage after use.
Weighing procedure (For liquids)
2.19 Place cleaned and dried specified glassware on the balance pan
2.20 . Tare the weight to zero
2.20 Choose the unit in which the sample is to be weighed. Press ‘F’ button in the balance to switch over from mg to g and vice versa.
2.21 Clean the balance for any spillage after use.
3.0 CLEANING:
3.1 Before cleaning, disconnect the balance from the power supply.
3.2 Do not use any aggressive cleaning agents or strong solvents.
3.3 Make sure that no liquid enters the balance housing.
3.4 After cleaning, wipe the balance with a soft lint free cloth.
4.0 HANDLING OF WEIGHT BOX:
4.1 Store the weight box in dust free area.
4.2 Do not touch the weights with bare hand, use a forceps while handling the weights.
4.3 Use certified weights only, before use check for validity of usage.
4.4 Clean the weights using lint free cloth moistened with small amount of diethyl ether and air dry.
CALIBRATION:
Calibration Schedule: Weekly once
01 Weigh the standard weights in combination and individually where mentioned 300g (Combined 200g +100 g) , 200 g, 100 g,, 50g, 20g , 10g ,5g , 2g and 1g record the weights displayed. The allowed variation limits (in %) for various weights
are given below.
S. No. Weight Allowed variation in g
01. 300 gm ± 0.30
02. 200 gm ± 0.20
03. 100 gm ± 0.10
04. 50 gm ± 0.05
05. 20 gm ± 0.02
06. 10 gm ± 0.02
07. 5 gm ± 0.02
08. 2 gm ± 0.02
MEASUREMENT UNCERTAINTY:
01. Calculate the measurement uncertainty using 50 gm standard weight as follows:
Measure the weight of 50 gm for 10 times (by placing at the center of the weighing pan) and calculate the standard deviation (SD) of the 10 weighings as follows. .
02. If the balance fails to meet the requirements mentioned above send the balance
for repair, and re-calibrate after repair. If it passes, use it for regular analysis.
03. Enter the details of calibration in the calibration form. Calibration shall be checked by a second person.
