INTRODUCTION:
Description pertaining to an article, which is relatively general in nature is solely to indicate properties of an article complying with monograph standards.
The properties are not in themselves standards or tests for purity even though they may indirectly assist in preliminary evaluation of an article.
DESCRIPTION OF MATERIALS:
Record the colour, crystalline nature, and/or clarity of the material by visual observation as per the following procedure
For Solids: Spread about 1 to 2 gm of material on a white surface in a thin layer and note the observations.
For Liquids :
(1) Take about 10 mL of liquid in 25 mL glass beaker and allow it to stand until the entrapped air is escaped.
(2) Note the observations by viewing from the top against a white background.
DESCRIPTION OF PRODUCTS :
For Tablets: Place 2 or 3 tablets on a white background and note the colour, shape, coated or uncoated, embossing and other observations, if any.
For Capsules:
(1) Place 2 or 3 capsules on a white background and note the size, colour of the cap and body, printing and other observations, if any.
(2) Remove the contents of not less than 5 capsules, spread on to a white glazed tile and note the description as described for materials.

PROCEDURE :
(1)For the packages containing not more than 25 g of an article:
Open the container and allow it to expose to air for about 15 minutes and then observe the odour.
(2 For the packages containing more than 25 g of an article:
Remove a portion of about 25 g of the article from the container to an open 100-mL evaporating dish. Allow it to expose to air for 15 minutes and observe the odour.
