Description

1.0 PURPOSE:

To describe the standard operating procedure for preventive maintenance of an air compressor.

2.0    SCOPE:

The standard operating procedure describes in detail the method for preventive maintenance of an air compressor.

3.0    RESPONSIBILITY:

The responsibility of preventive maintenance of an air compressor lies with the staff of rank not lower than the junior utility operator.

The responsibility of preparing, reviewing and approving the standard operating procedure lies with the Manager - Maintenance, Head of Production and Head of QAD respectively.

4.0    METHOD:

4.1    Preventive maintenance shall be carried out for Air Compressor as per the prescribed schedules and procedures.

4.2    Job instruction shall be followed for Half yearly and Annual preventive maintenance as per Format BREAKDOWN  RECTIFICATION OF LEAF FILTERS as shown in Annexure-II of SOP BREAKDOWN   RECTIFICATION  OF BOILER.  during preventive maintenance of the equipment by the  doer and checker.

4.3        Daily Preventive Maintenance checks :

4.3.1      Ensure the lubricating oil is in between ½ and 3/4th  of the oil level view glass. If the oil level is low, add oil.

4.3.3      Drain water from the water separator.

4.3.4      Check drive belts for any worn outs.  Replace worn out belts.

4.3.5      Check the drive belts tension. Tighten if found loose.

4.3.6      Start the air compressor and check for air leaks. If any leaks are found, rectify them.

4.3.8      Check whether the "Cut-in" and "Cut-out" pressures are within the range as shown in the annexure-I.  If the pressures are not within range, set the loading/unloading valve till the required range obtains.

4.3.9      Ensure the motor amperage is within the limits.

4.3.10     Stop the air compressor.

4.3.11     Clean the dust and dirt on the compressor.

4.4        Half yearly Preventive Maintenance checks:

4.4.1      Remove the loading/unloading valve, service the valve with CTC and refix it.

4.4.2      Drain the lubricating oil from air compressor by removing the oil drain plug situated at bottom of the oil tank.

4.4.3      Fix the drain plug with hand tight pour approximately ½ liter oil and again drain it.

4.4.4      Tighten the drain plug and add oil up to 3/4thof the oil level indicating glass.

4.4.5      Start the compressor and observe for any abnormality in running, if any abnormality is observed, stop the compressor and rectify it.

4.4.6      Stop the compressor.

4.4.7      Isolate the equipment electrically.

4.4.8      Keep "MEN ON LINE" board to the feeder.

4.4.9      Ensure all incoming and outgoing terminals of the contactors and connectors are tight.

4.4.10     If any burnout wires or any burnout end connections are found rectify them.

4.4.11     Remove motor terminal box cover. Ensure that all terminals of the motor are tight and refix the terminal box cover.

4.4.12     Ensure that all bed bolts of the air compressor and motor are tight.

4.4.13     Remove "MEN ON LINE" board and switch "ON" the main isolator of   the air compressor.

4.4.14     Start the air compressor and check the amperage of the motor. If found within the limits, stop the air compressor.

4.5        Annual Preventive Maintenance checks:

4.5.1      Remove dust dirt by emery paper and paint the compressor and related equipments like condenser, receiver etc,.

4.5.2      Arrange an authorized external party for testing the thickness of the air receiver and after cooler shell.

4.5.3        If the compressor is not running with the full efficiency by not developing the required air pressure, it shall be overhauled by an external agency.

5.0        RECORDING:
The responsibility of recording daily preventive maintenance schedule in the Format No.xxxxx lies with the staff of not less than the junior utility operator.

The responsibility of recording half yearly and yearly checks in the preventive maintenance compliance report lies with the staff of rank not lower  than  the maintenance supervisor.
