This drug will slow the actions of alpha-glucosidase and alpha-amylase enzymes thereby slowing the appearance of sugar in the blood after a meal. Slowing food digestion helps keep blood glucose from rising very high after meals.
Tablets: 25, 50 and 100 mg.
Type 2 diabetes
Diarrhea, flatulence, abdominal pain, liver failure, skin infections, increase in liver enzyme, decrease in vitamin B6, calcium levels and hematocrit.
Contraindicated in pregnancy and lactation.
Acarbose should be stored at room temperature, 59-86°F (15-30°C) away from moisture and heat in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children.
