Actions

Used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, Anakinra blocks the biologic activity of IL-1 by competitively inhibiting IL-1 binding to the interleukin-1 type I receptor (IL-1RI), which is expressed in a wide variety of tissues and organs. 

Dosage/Dosage form

100 mg daily take same time every day.

Therapeutic uses

For the treatment of

  • NOMID (Neonatal-Onset Multisystem Inflammatory Disease).
  • Adult rheumatoid arthritis 

Adverse effects/Side effects

Increased incidence of serious infection, notably neutropenia, Blood dyscrasias, headache, diarrhea, nausea, and abdominal pain.

Interaction

Coadmin with etanercept may induce serious infection and neutropenia.

Contraindications

Active infections.

Precautions

  • Caution when used in patients with chronic infections or immunocompromised patients. 
  • Monitor neutrophil counts before initiating treatment, mthly for 3 mth, and quarterly up to 1 yr thereafter.
  • Discontinue treatment if patient develops serious infection.
  • May increase risk of lymphoma.
  • Avoid concurrent usage with TNF blocking agents or live vaccines.
