Pharmacokinetics

Actions

It is indicated for induction of consolidation and remission in patients with APL (acute promyelocytic leukemia) who are refractory to, or have relapsed from, retinoid and anthracycline chemotherapy.

Dosage/Dosage form

0.15 mg/kg, IV, daily doses, up to 25 doses.

Therapeutic uses

In Acute promyelocytic leukaemia (Intravenously).

Adverse effects/Side effects

Arsenic trioxide can cause cough, constipation, shortness of breath, joints pain, painful breathing, troubled sleeping fever, edema in the ankles or feet, diarrhoea, weight gain, hypokalemia, fatigue, myalgia, easy bruising, dry skin, weight loss, increased micturition, sore throat, hyperglycemia, mild rashes and vomiting.

Interaction

Arsenic trioxide may interact narcotics, anti-depressants, ondansetron, clarithromycin, anti-arrhythmic drugs, diuretics, sumatriptan, anti-malarial drugs, chlorpromazine and droperidol.

Contraindications

Pregnancy; lactation; hypersensitivity
