Actions

Dosage/Dosage form

2.4 mg/kg via IM or IV, repaeat after 12 and 24 hours later, thereafter daily once.

Therapeutic uses

For the treatment of severe malaria (Falciparum malaria).

Adverse effects/Side effects

Transient and reversible reticulocytopaenia, bradycardia, drug fever, rash, transient 1st-degree heart block and reversible elevation of serum transaminases.

Interaction

  • Additive effect with chloroquine.
  • Antimalarial potentiating action seen with mefloquine, primaquine and tetracycline. 
  • Antagonistic effect with pyrimethamine and sulphonamides.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity, pregnancy and lactation
