Actions

Ascorbic Acid (vitamin C) is a water-soluble vitamin indicated for the prevention and treatment of scurvy, as ascorbic acid deficiency results in scurvy. Collagenous structures are primarily affected, and lesions develop in bones and blood vessels. Administration of ascorbic acid completely reverses the symptoms of ascorbic acid deficiency.

Dosage/Dosage form

  • Scurvy: ≥250 mg daily in divided doses for the treatment and for the prevention of scurvy the dose is 25-75 mg daily
  • Thalassaemia: 100-200 mg daily, to be given with desferrioxamine.

Adverse effects/Side effects

Hematuria, severe lower back pain, painful micturition, persistent diarrhoea, nausea or vomiting, dizziness, abdominal cramps and heartburn.

Interaction

  • Avoid smoking while taking Ascorbic acid
  • Deferroxamine, flufenazine, hormonal contraceptives, elemental iron, salicylates, warfarin, disulfiram, fluphenazine, mexiletine, vitamin B12.

Precautions

  • Ascorbic acid can interact with aspirin, levodopa, and tetracycline group of antibiotics, OCPs, fluphenazine, blood thinners, nicotine patches, antacids and barbiturates.
  • Ascorbic acid is contraindicated in patients with glucose-6-phosphate deficiency (G6PD), liver and renal diseases.
