Pharmacokinetics

Actions

Astaxanthin is an antioxidant that potentially scavenges reactive oxygen species (ROS) including superoxide anions and singlet oxygen that involve in a degenerative diseases/disorders and cellular damage.

Dosage/Dosage form

2-12 mg/day for 2-6 months. 

Therapeutic uses

An anti-oxidant is used in ocular diseases, as a supplemental therapy for cancer, sunburns, stroke, male infertility and hyperlipidemia.

Adverse effects/Side effects

Interaction

  • Astaxanthin may interact with angiotensin-receptor blockers, ACE-II inhibitors, cytochrome P450 inhibitors, anti-histamines, immunomodulators, statins, calcium-lowering drugs and oral contraceptive drugs.
  • Astaxanthin may interact with several herbs including black cohosh, carotenoids, lycopene, lutein, canthaxanthin, red yeast rice and saw palmetto.

Contraindications

  • Do not give Astaxanthin to children without a physician’s advice.
  • Lactation
