Actions

Atenolol, a competitive beta (1)-selective adrenergic antagonist,with the lowest lipid solubility of this class of drugs. Atenolol is used alone in the management of hypertension and with chlorthalidone to treat edema.

Dosage/Dosage form

  • 25-100 mg daily as a single dose for hypertension
  • 50-100 mg daily given as single or divided doses for angina pectoris and for Migraine prophylaxis

Therapeutic uses

In angina pectoris, as prophylaxis of migraine and in hypertension

Adverse effects/Side effects

Bronchospasm; cold extremities, heart failure, fatigue, dizziness, insomnia, lethargy, confusion, headache, depression, nightmares, nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, impotence and paraesthesia.

Interaction

  • May increase effects of drugs which slow AV conduction (digoxin, verapamil, diltiazem).
  • Decreased effect with aluminum and calcium salts, barbiturates, cholestyramine, NSAIDs, ampicillin, rifampicin.

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity, sinus node dysfunction and Sinus bradycardia
