Actions

Atovaquone is a highly lipophilic drug, in sensitive parasites atovaquone acts selectively by affecting mitochondrial electron transport and parallel processes such as ATP and pyrimidine biosynthesis. 

Dosage/Dosage form

The recommended oral dose is 1500 mg/10ml once daily administered with meals.

Therapeutic uses

Pneumocystis carinii Pneumonia, Malaria

Adverse effects/Side effects

Flu like syndrome, fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and difficulty in breath.

Interaction

Drinking alcoholic beverages will impair the Atovaquone metabolism, and increases the level of drug in the blood that may lead to serious side effects.

Precautions
