Actions

It inhibits the microbial cellular protein synthesis.

Dosage/Dosage form

Apply thin film twice daily as a gel 15% or as a cream 20%.

Therapeutic uses

For the topical treatment of mild-to-moderate inflammatory acne vulgaris.

Adverse effects/Side effects

Severe itching, changes in skin color, redness and peeling of skin, stinging or burning sensation.

Interaction

  • Digoxin and digitoxin may decrease the cardiotoxic activities of Azelaic Acid.
  • The risk or severity of adverse effects can be increased when Docetaxel or Cabazitaxel is combined with Azelaic Acid.

Precautions

  • Azelaic acid should not be prescribed in patients with propylene glycol allergy.
  • Occlusive dressings or wrappings should not be used.
  • Avoid contact with eyes, mouth or other mucous membranes.
  • Monitor for hypopigmentation in patients with dark complexion.
  •  Recommend patient to use only very mild soaps or soapless cleansing lotions for facial washing.
