Actions

Azithromycin binds to the 50S subunit of the 70S bacterial ribosomes, and therefore inhibits RNA-dependent protein synthesis in bacterial cells.

Dosage/Dosage form

  • Typhoid fever: 500 mg once daily for 7 days, IV.
  • Uncomplicated gonorrhea: 2g as a single dose
  • Respiratory tract infection and for skin and soft tissue infections: 500 mg once daily for three days. 

Therapeutic uses

Laryngitis, middle ear infections, non-gonococcal urethritis and cervicitis, tonsillitis, bronchitis, throat infections, Typhoid, pneumonia and sinusitis. 

Adverse effects/Side effects

Mild to moderate nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, flatulence, dyspepsia, cramping, diarrhoea, cholestatic jaundice, angioedema, headache, dizziness, somnolence, vertigo and transient elevations of liver enzyme values.

Interaction

  • Increased serum concentrations of digoxin and ciclosporin.
  • Antacids containing aluminium and magnesium salts reduce rate of absorption.
  • Food may alter absorption
  • Increased risk of ergot toxicity.
