Pharmacokinetics

Actions

Aztreonam inhibitits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to PBP3. 

Dosage/Dosage form

  • 1 g as a single dose for gonorrhoea.
  • 1-8g/day in divided doses for the treatment of gram negative bacterial infections as IM/IV
  • 0.5-1g 8to12 hours for urinary tract infections
  • 75 mg 3days daily as  inhalation

Therapeutic uses

Urinary tract infections and lower respiratory tract infections.

Adverse effects/Side effects

Thrombocytopenia, diarrhoea, neutropenia; pseudomembranous colitis overgrowth of susceptible organisms, nausea, vomiting, altered taste; jaundice, hepatitis, Pain and swelling,  high liver enzymes; partial thromboplastin time; long prothrombin time, rash, urticaria, eosinophilia.

Interaction

Concurrent use with oral anticoagulants may increase prothrombin time

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity; lactation

Storage

Once reconstituted, it should be used within 48 hr if stored at 15-30°C or 7 days if stored at 2-8°C.
