Actions

Bacampicillin is a prodrug of ampicillin and is microbiologically inactive.

Dosage/Dosage form

400-800 mg 2-3 times/day

Therapeutic uses

Prescribed for uncomplicated gonorrhea and for susceptible infections

Adverse effects/Side effects

CNS toxicity, uticaria; joint pains; rashes, angioedema; serum sickness-like reactions; haemolytic anaemia, neutropenia; convulsions; diarrhoea; thrombocytopenia; antibiotic-associated colitis. Nausea, fever, vomiting, interstitial nephritis, pseudomembranous colitis.

Interaction

  • Bacteriostatic drugs e.g. tetracyclines, chloramphenicol, and other antibacterials.
  • Probenecid prolongs T1/2 of bacampicillin. 
  • Anticoagulants.

Contraindications

HIV infection, Infectious mononucleosis, lymphatic leukemia, hypersensitivity to penicillins

Precautions
