Actions

BCG elicits an acute, local inflammatory reaction with sub-acute granulomatous reactions with macrophages in the urothelium and lymphocyte and lamina propria of the urinary bladder. The anti-tumor activity of BCG is T lymphocyte dependent.

Dosage/Dosage form

BCG is only for intravesical instillation only. Do not inject BCG as IM/IV/SC. One vial contains 81 mg of lyophilized BCG. The powder should be reconstituted with 3 ml of diluents.

Interaction

  • BCG may interact with anti-cancer drugs, radiation, cyclosporine, basiliximab, sirolimus, mycophenolate, azathioprine, corticosteroids and other immunosuppressive drugs.
  • Co-administration of BCG with antibiotics results in decreased effectiveness of antibiotics.

Contraindications

Breastfeeding mothers should avoid nursing while receiving BCG.

BCG is contraindicated in patients with tuberculosis, myasthenia gravis, immune deficiency, bladder infections, history of aneurysm, active infections, bladder surgery, pace makers, organ transplantation, hematuria and patient receiving corticosteroid therapy, bladder radiotherapy or surgery within the past two weeks.
