Pharmacokinetics

Actions

The drug acts peripherally by anesthetizing the stretch receptors located in the lungs, respiratory passages, and pleura through the dampening of their activity, which reduces the cough reflex.

Dosage/Dosage form

The usual dose is 100 mg thrice a day, the maximum dose is 600 mg if needed.

Adverse effects/Side effects

Sedation, mental confusion, itching, nausea, eye irritation and numbness.

Interaction

Benzonatate can interact with narcotics, sedating anti-histamines, sedatives, anxiolytics, muscle relaxants, anti-epileptic drugs. These drugs may increase the drowsy effects of Benzonatate.

Contraindications

Benzonatate is contraindicated in patients with Benzonatate or procaine or tetracaine allergy.
