Actions

Benzoyl peroxide is used as an acne treatment, for improving flour, for bleaching hair and teeth, for polymerising polyester and many other uses.

Dosage/Dosage form

  • Apply a 2.5-10% preparation once or twice daily for acne.
  • Apply a 20% lotion every 8-12 hours for Decubitus/stasis ulcers.

Therapeutic uses

For the treatment of mild-moderate acne vulgaris.

Adverse effects/Side effects

Excessive drying of skin, allergic dermatitis. May bleach fabrics or hair. Skin discoloration; skin rash, peeling, transient local oedema.

Interaction

PABA sunscreens may transiently discolor fabric

Precautions

  • Monitor for side effects, including scaling, redness, dryness, burning or persistent itching.
  • Discontinue if severe irritation develops.
  • Inform health care provider if noted and significant.
  • Do not use occlusive dressing.
  • Restart with tolerable levels of treatment after irritation has cleared.
  • May cause dermatitis in allergic patients.
  • Apply carefully near the eyes, mouth, neck and other mucous membranes as well as other sensitive areas.
