Actions

Betahistine primarily acts as a histamine H1-agonist with 0.07 times the activity of histamine. Betahistine is believed to act by reducing the asymmetrical functioning of sensory vestibular organs as well as by increasing vestibulocochlear blood flow.

Dosage/Dosage form

 Initially 16 mg/day, 24-48 mg daily maintenance dose.

Rash, pruritus, urticaria, dyspepsia, nausea, peptic ulcer disease, headache, dizziness, insomnia

Interaction

May antagonise antihistamines. May decrease bronchodilator effects of β-2 agonists.

Phaeochromocytoma, porphyria
