Betamethasone and its derivatives, betamethasone sodium phosphate and betamethasone acetate, are synthetic glucocorticoids. Used for its antiinflammatory or immunosuppressive properties.
Apply as directed by physician.
Topical use (cream, lotion and ointment): for relief of the inflammatory and pruritic manifestations of corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses. Foam (Topical use): used for the relief of the pruritic and inflammatory manifestations of corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses of the scalp. Systemic use: for the treatment of edocrine disorders, collagen diseases, rheumatic disorders, allergic states, dermatological diseases, hematologic disorders, ophthalmic diseases, neoplastic diseases, respiratory diseases, edematous states, gastrointestinal diseases, tuberculous meningitis and trichinosis.
Sodium and fluid retention, potassium and calcium depletion. Muscle wasting, weakness, depression, osteoporosis. GI disturbances and bleeding, hirsutism, bruising.
· Increased hyperglycaemia and hypokalaemia with thiazide diuretics.
· Response to anticoagulants altered.
· Increased incidence of peptic ulcer or GI bleeding with concurrent NSAIDs administration.
· Dose of antidiabetics and antihypertensives needs to be increased.
· Decreases serum conc of salicylates and antimuscarinic agents.
· Enhanced effect in women taking oestrogens or oral contraceptives.
· Reduced efficacy with concurrent use of carbamazepine, phenytoin, primidone, barbiturates and rifampicin.
Food Interactions: May be taken with food to decrease GI stress.
Hypersensitivity; systemic fungal or acute infections
