Pharmacokinetics

Actions

Bisacodyl is hydrolyzed by intestinal brush border enzymes and colonic bacteria to form an active metabolite BHPM; (bis-(p-hydroxyphenyl) pyridyl-2 methane) it acts on the colonic mucosa directly to produce colonic peristalsis.

Dosage/Dosage form

10 to 15 mg per oral. 10 mg per rectal as suppository.

Therapeutic uses

Used to treat constipation or to empty the bowels before colonoscopy.

Adverse effects/Side effects

Abdominal discomfort (colic, cramps). Suppositories may cause irritation & proctitis

Interaction

Do not give antacids or milk within one hour of taking the drug.
May cause enteric coating of tablets to dissolve, resulting in gastric lining irritation or gastric indigestion.

Contraindications

Intestinal obstruction, acute surgical abdomen or severe dehydration

Storage

Store tablets and suppositories in tightly closed containers in cool location
