Actions

It is an antibiotic has an antitumor activity, inhibits the synthesis of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) selectively. The guanine and cytosine content correlates with the degree of mitomycin-induced cross-linking. 

Dosage/Dosage form

The recommended dose is 0.25 to 0.5 units per kg once or twice in a week.

Therapeutic uses

Used to treat head and neck cancer, skin cancer, oral cavity cancer and lymphoma.

Adverse effects/Side effects

Fever, thrombophloebitis (injection). Acute anaphlyactoid reactions, hyperpyrexia. Rash, erthyema, pruritus, vesiculate, hyperkeratosis, nail changes, hyper pigmentation, alopecia, stomatitis, interstitial pnemonitis, pulmonary toxicity, fibrosis, cardiorespiratory collapse in patients with lymphoma.

Interaction

  • Elimination decreased by cisplatin.
  • Lomustine increases severity of leukopenia.
  • Decreases plasma levels of digoxin and Phenytoin.
  • Enhanced pulmonary toxicity in patients given with oxygen.

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity.
  • Severe pulmonary disease
  • Pregnancy and lactation.
