Actions

Botulinum Toxin Type A blocks neuromuscular transmission by binding to acceptor sites on sympathetic or motor nerve terminals and inhibiting the release of acetylcholine. This inhibition occurs as the neurotoxin cleaves SNAP-25, a protein integral to the successful docking and release of acetylcholine from vesicles situated within nerve endings.

Dosage/Dosage form

50 units intradermally.

Therapeutic uses

Used for the treatment of hyperhidrosis, cervical dystonia, and overactive bladder, moderate form of muscular spasms in hands and arms and eyelid spasms. 

Adverse effects/Side effects

Cough, fever, headache, chills, body pains, fear and sneezing.

Interaction

  • Botulinum toxin type A may interact with diuretics, muscle relaxants, sedatives, bronchodilators, irritable bowel syndrome medicines, anti-histamines and hypnotics.
  • Avoid outdoor activities or sports for two days after Botulinum toxin type A treatment.
  • Avoid antiperspirants or deodorants using within 24hours of Botulinum toxin type A administration.

Precautions

  • Botulinum toxin type A is contraindicated in patients with bleeding disorders, facial weakness, myasthenia gravis, ALS, asthma or emphysema, heart disorders, convulsions and other muscular disorders.
  • Botulinum toxin type A should not be used within four months of previous shots. 
  • Botulinum toxin type A should not be used if had or need to undergo facial surgery.
  • Botulinum toxin type A can cause vision changes.
  • Do not operate heavy machineries or do not drive vehicle within 48 hours of Botulinum toxin type A administration.
