Pharmacokinetics

Actions

: It has a weak mineralocorticoid and a high glucocorticoid effect effect. It binds to the glucocorticoid receptor with a higher binding affinity than cortisol and prednisolone. When it is administered systemically, suppression of endogenous cortical concentrations and an impairment of the HPA (hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal) axis function have been observed. 

Dosage/Dosage form

  • 9 mg daily; up to 8 weeks for Inflammatory bowel disease as oral
  • 100 mcg into each nostril bid for rhinitis.
  • 400 mcg daily in 2 divided doses for asthma as meter dose inhaler.

Therapeutic uses

Asthma, inflammatory bowel disease and for rhinitis.

Adverse effects/Side effects

Loss of skin collagen and SC atrophy; dryness, local hypo pigmentation of deeply pigmented skin; irritation, rarely ulceration, epistaxis, or perforation of the nasal septum; smell and taste disturbances; hoarseness and candidiasis of the mouth or throat.

Interaction

Avoid grapefruit juice.

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity.
  • Acute infections uncontrolled by antimicrobial chemotherapy.
