Pharmacokinetics

Actions

Butriptyline possesses the anti-depressant property by inhibition of neuronal re-uptake of serotonin and norepinephrine. The tricyclic anti-depressant drug exerts weak sedating property.

Dosage/Dosage form

25 mg of Butriptyline thrice daily, daily dose should not exceed 150 mg/day.

Interaction

Butriptyline may interact with verapamil, disulfiram, diltiazem, cimetidine, adrenaline, amiodarone, SSRIs, thioridazine, propafenone, baclofen, MAOIs, sotalol, noradrenaline, estrogen, sibutramine, nitrates, carbamazepine, clonidine, terfenadine, procainamide, pimozide, opioid analgesics, sedatives, anti-muscarinics and anxiolytics. Do not consume alcohol while taking Butriptyline. It can cause serious adverse events.

Contraindications

Butriptyline is contraindicated in patients with porphyria, severe hepatic disorders, recent history of MI and CVD, behavioural disorders, seizures, urinary retention, close-angle glaucoma, diabetes, concurrent electroconvulsive therapy, pheochromocytoma and thyroid dysfunctions.
