Actions

Dobutamine directly stimulates beta-1 receptors of the heart to increase myocardial contractility and stroke volume, resulting in increased cardiac output.

Adverse effects/Side effects

Palpitation, headache, nausea, increased heart rate and blood pressure, cardiac arrhythmias, tissue necrosis.

Interaction

  • Increased vasopressor effect of dobutamine when used with oxytocic drugs, bretylium, guanethidine or TCAs.
  • Increased cardiac output when used with nitroprusside.

Contraindications

During

  • Hypersensitivity
  • Pregnancy
  • Idiopathic hypertrophic subaortic stenosis (IHSS).
