Actions

It is an analog of GABA, used as an anticonvulsant drug to treat ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), partial seizures, and painful neuropathies. Gabapentin has high lipid solubility, is not metabolized by the liver, has no protein binding, and doesn't possess the usual drug interactions.

It is anticonvulsant, prescribed for epilepsy and post herpetic neuralgia.

Adverse effects/Side effects

Somnolence, dizziness, ataxia, weakness, paraesthesia, fatigue, headache; nystagmus, diplopia; nausea, vomiting, wt gain, dyspepsia; rhinitis; tremor; leucopenia; altered LFTs; Stevens-Johnson syndrome.

Interaction

  • Absorption reduced with antacids.
  • Cimetidine may reduce gabapentin clearance. 

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity. Lactation

Precautions

  • Discontinuation or transfer from other antiepileptics, history of psychotic illness; renal impairment; pregnancy.
  • Gabapentin should not be discontinued abruptly after long term use.
  • Abrupt or over rapid withdrawal may provoke a withdrawal syndrome similar to alcohol or benzodiazepine withdrawal.
