Glucagon

Glucagon is a medication and hormone. As a medication it is used to treat low blood sugar, beta blocker overdose, calcium channel blocker overdose, and those with anaphylaxis who do not improve with epinephrine.

: Used in the treatment of hypoglycemia and in gastric imaging, glucagon increases blood glucose concentration and is used in the treatment of hypoglycemia. Glucagon acts only on liver glycogen, converting it to glucose through the release of insulin. It also relaxes the smooth muscles of the gastrointestinal tract.

The recommended dose is 1 mg given as SC, IM or IV. 

For treatment of severe hypoglycemia, also used in gastrointestinal imaging

Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, Hypokalaemia

May enhance anticoagulant effect of oral anticoagulants e.g. warfarin

Phaeochromocytoma; hypersensitivity

Precautions

• Ineffective in alcohol-induced hypoglycaemia, chronic hypoglycaemia, starvation and adrenal insufficiency; diagnostic aid in diabetic patients or in elderly with heart disease.
• Insulinoma; glucagonoma.
• Monitor prothrombin time and adjust oral anticoagulant dosage.
• Pregnancy.
