Dose is based on patient’s condition. 

Therapeutic uses

For the treatment of hairy cell leukemia, malignant melanoma, and AIDS-related Kaposi's sarcoma.

Adverse effects/Side effects

Hepatotoxicity, Flu-like symptoms; pneumonitis, pulmonary infiltrates and pneumonia, hypersensitivity reactions; alopecia; myelosuppression, nausea; ocular side effects; lethargy; autoimmune diseases, anorexia; CV problems; depression; nephrotoxicity; hypertriglyceridaemia; thyroid abnormalities; hyperglycaemia; psoriasiform rash; confusion; coma; seizures. 

Interaction

  • Reduces clearance of theophylline.
  • Myelosuppression is enhanced with other myelosuppressive drugs (e.g. zidovudine).

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity. Hepatic decompensation, autoimmune hepatitis or a history of autoimmune disease, immunosuppressed transplant recipients.

Precautions

  • History of pulmonary disease (e.g. COPD) or DM prone to ketoacidosis.
  • Monitor patients with preexisting or history of psychiatric disorder, MI and/or arrhythmic disorders.
  • Coagulation disorders or severe myelosuppression.
  • Poorly controlled thyroid abnormalities.
  • Perform ophthalmological exam on patients with preexisting ophthalmologic disorders (e.g. diabetic or hypertensive retinopathy).
  • WBC count will be monitor in those receiving other myelosuppressive agents. and in myelosuppressed patients.
  •  Preexisting psoriasis.
  • Do not drive or operate machinery.
  •  Pregnancy and lactation.
