Actions

This is a synthetic ammonium compound, used as a bronchodilator in the management of cholinergic-mediated bronchospasm associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and in the treatment of rhinorrhea associated with the common cold or with allergic or nonallergic seasonal rhinitis.

Dosage/Dosage form

It comes as a nasal spray to be inhaled through the nostrils.

Therapeutic uses

For the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. It is used in rhinitis, for various bronchial disorders, and as an antiarrhythmic.

Adverse effects/Side effects

Buccal ulceration, dry mouth, paralytic ileus, urinary retention, headache, constipation, nausea, paradoxical bronchospasm, acute angle-closure glaucoma, immediate hypersensitivity reactions (urticaria, angioedema), nasal dryness and epistaxis (nasal spray). Anaphylactic reactions, atrial fibrillation, supraventricular tachycardia.

Interaction

Increased toxicity with other anticholinergic drugs
