Isoxsuprine

It is a drug used as a vasodilator in humans and equines. Isoxsuprine is a ?2 adrenoreceptor agonist that causes direct relaxation of uterine and vascular smooth muscle via ?2 receptors.

• The recommended dose is 200-500 mcg/min via IV infusion to arrest premature labor.
• Peripheral vascular disease: The recommended dose is 10-20 mg 3-4 times/day per oral. 

This is a vasodilator, indicated to relief of symptoms associated with cerebrovascular insufficiency, for the treatment of peripheral vascular disease, and premature labor.  It relaxes blood vessels, which makes them wider and allows blood to pass through them more easily.

Hypotension, dizziness, palpitation, nausea, vomiting, abdominal distress, severe rash, flushing, tachycardia. Maternal pulmonary oedema and foetal tachycardia (IV).

Other vasodilators or hypotensive agents will potentiates the effect of this drug.

• Recent arterial haemorrhage.
• Do not use in premature labour and do not give immediately postpartum if there is an infection

Precautions

• It may cause dizziness, do not drive a car or operate machinery while taking this medication.
• Caution should be taken in patients who are taking other medications, with history of bleeding problems, any allergy, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
