Dosage/Dosage form

  • The recommended dose is 200-500 mcg/min via IV infusion to arrest premature labor.
  • Peripheral vascular disease: The recommended dose is 10-20 mg 3-4 times/day per oral. 

Therapeutic uses

This is a vasodilator, indicated to relief of symptoms associated with cerebrovascular insufficiency, for the treatment of peripheral vascular disease, and premature labor.  It relaxes blood vessels, which makes them wider and allows blood to pass through them more easily.

Adverse effects/Side effects

Hypotension, dizziness, palpitation, nausea, vomiting, abdominal distress, severe rash, flushing, tachycardia. Maternal pulmonary oedema and foetal tachycardia (IV).

Interaction

Other vasodilators or hypotensive agents will potentiates the effect of this drug.

Contraindications

  • Recent arterial haemorrhage.
  • Do not use in premature labour and do not give immediately postpartum if there is an infection
