Actions

It is direct acting sympathomimetic adrenergic alpha-agonists, used as a vasoconstrictor to relieve nasal congestion. By causing vasoconstriction of superficial conjunctival blood vessels this elicits relief of conjunctival hyperemia. The drug's action has been demonstrated in acute allergic conjunctivitis and in chemical (chloride) conjunctivitis.

Therapeutic uses

For treatment of redness associated with minor irritations of the eye and nasal congestion.

Adverse effects/Side effects

Local stinging or burning, sneezing, dryness of mouth and throat. Prolonged or frequent use may cause rebound congestion. Headache, insomnia, tachycardia, hypertension, nervousness, nausea, dizziness, palpitation, arrhythmia. Eye drops: Dryness of eye.

Glaucoma; hyperthyroidism, angina, hypertension, advanced arteriosclerotic conditions.
