Actions

Rabeprazole prevents the production of acid in the stomach. This decreases the symptoms and prevents injury to the stomach or esophagus in patients with GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) or ulcers. Rabeprazole is also useful for Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Rabeprazole may also be used with antibiotics to get rid of bacteria that are associated with some ulcers. By inhibition of the ATPase, H+ and K+ which is found at the secretory surface of parietal cells, rabeprazole suppress the gastric acid secretion.

Dosage/Dosage form

  • PO- Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease; erosive oesophagitis: 20 mg once daily in the morning for 4-8 weeks. Maintenance: 10-20 mg once daily.
  • 10 mg once daily for 4 wk, upon symptom resolution, may continue with 10 mg once daily when needed for non-erosive oesophagitis.
