Actions

Riluzole, a member of the benzothiazole class, is indicated for the treatment of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Riluzole extends survival and/or time to tracheostomy.

Dosage/Dosage form

The recommended dose is 50 mg orally every 12 hours.

For the treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, Lou Gehrig's disease)

Adverse effects/Side effects

Tiredness, muscle weakness, difficulty in breathing, fever. Upset stomach, diarrhea, and loss of appetite. 

Interaction

  • Drugs such as acetaminophen, anti-cancer drugs, live vaccines, allopurinol, omeprazole, amitriptyline, auranofin, anti-tubercular drugs, methyldopa, omeprazole, OCPs, methotrexate, erythromycin, theophylline, ciprofloxacin, sulfasalazine, methyldopa, niacin, ACE inhibitors, statins, anti-retroviral drugs, NSAIDs and anti-convulsant drugs riluzole may interacted.

Contraindications

Riluzole is contraindicated in patients with renal or hepatic diseases. Do not receive live virus vaccine while using Riluzole.
