Rapidly absorbed orally.

Actions

Rivaroxaban is an anticoagulant which binds directly to factor Xa. Thereafter, it effectively blocks the amplification of the coagulation cascade, preventing the formation of thrombus.

Dosage/Dosage form

The recommended dose is 10 mg taken orally once daily with or without food.

Therapeutic uses

Rivaroxaban is indicated for the prevention of

  • VTE (Venous thromboembolic events)
  •  Treatment of DVT (deep vein thrombosis)
  • Stroke and systemic embolism
  • PE (Pulmonary embolism) 

Adverse effects/Side effects

Hypersensitivity, anaphylactic reaction and anaphylactic shock, bone marrow suppression, liver inflammation.

Interaction

  • Rivaroxaban may interact with calcium-channel blockers, anti-fungal drugs, bosentan, conivaptan, St. John’s Wort, quinidine, anti-retroviral drugs, barbiturates, armodafinil, amiodarone, carbamazepine, immunosuppressive drugs, phenytoin.
  • Rivaroxaban may increase the risk of the brain or spinal bleeding and hemorrhage, if anticoagulants are used concomitantly.

Contraindications

Contraindicated in patients with genetic spinal defect, spinal surgery, hemorrhagic stroke, active bleeding, GI bleeding, uncontrolled BP and bleeding disorders.
