Rivaroxaban

Rivaroxaban, sold under the brand name Xarelto, among others, is an anticoagulant medication (blood thinner), which is taken by mouth. It is commonly used to prevent blood clots.

Rapidly absorbed orally.

Rivaroxaban is an anticoagulant which binds directly to factor Xa. Thereafter, it effectively blocks the amplification of the coagulation cascade, preventing the formation of thrombus.

The recommended dose is 10 mg taken orally once daily with or without food.

Rivaroxaban is indicated for the prevention of

• VTE (Venous thromboembolic events)
•  Treatment of DVT (deep vein thrombosis)
• Stroke and systemic embolism
• PE (Pulmonary embolism) 

Hypersensitivity, anaphylactic reaction and anaphylactic shock, bone marrow suppression, liver inflammation.

• Rivaroxaban may interact with calcium-channel blockers, anti-fungal drugs, bosentan, conivaptan, St. John’s Wort, quinidine, anti-retroviral drugs, barbiturates, armodafinil, amiodarone, carbamazepine, immunosuppressive drugs, phenytoin.
• Rivaroxaban may increase the risk of the brain or spinal bleeding and hemorrhage, if anticoagulants are used concomitantly.

Contraindicated in patients with genetic spinal defect, spinal surgery, hemorrhagic stroke, active bleeding, GI bleeding, uncontrolled BP and bleeding disorders.

Precautions

• Monitor kidney function, hemoglobin, hematocrit, and blood pressure regularly while taking this medication.
