Pharmacokinetics

Rivastigmine is rapidly metabolized by cholinesterase-mediated hydrolysis.

Actions

Rivastigmine is a parasympathomimetic and a reversible cholinesterase inhibitor.

Dosage/Dosage form

The starting dose is 1.5 mg twice a day (BID).

Therapeutic uses

For the treatment of mild to moderate dementia associated with Parkinson's disease or of the Alzheimer's type.

Adverse effects/Side effects

Accidental trauma, fatigue, asthenia, dizziness, headache, somnolence, agitation, insomnia, confusion, depression, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, dyspepsia, upper respiratory tract infection, urinary tract infection.

Interaction

  • May exaggerate the effects of succinylcholine-type muscle relaxants during anaesthesia.
  • Tobacco smoking may increase its clearance.
  • Food delays absorption

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to other carbamate derivatives.
  • Severe hepatic impairment.
