Adverse effects/Side effects

Headache, fever, rash, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, anaphylactic reaction, demyelinating disease, myalgia, pain, urticaria, sepsis and weakness. Fever, headache, malaise, injection-site reactions (such as pain, tenderness and swelling), nausea, vomiting.

Interaction

  • Concurrent use with immunosuppressants may increase the adverse effects of live vaccines.
  • Avoid alcohol within 2 hours of consuming the capsule.
  • May reduce the diagnostic effect of tuberculin tests.
  • Mefloquine may increase the efficacy of typhoid vaccine.
  • Concurrent use with immunoglobulins or antibiotics may reduce the efficacy of typhoid vaccine. 

Contraindications

  • Vaccination should be postponed in patients with acute febrile illness or acute GI illness. Oral vaccine:
  • Not to be used in acquired or congenital immunodeficient state, including patients receiving antimitotic drugs or immunosuppressive.

Precautions

  • Monitor patient for possible adverse reactions. Report suspected adverse reactions following immunization to the Department of Health and Human Services Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System.
  • Not for treatment of typhoid fever.
  • Vaccination may not provide full proetction thus, travellers should be advised to take all necessary precautions to avoid contact or ingestion of potentially contaminated food or water sources. IM admin:
  • Caution when used in patients with a history of bleeding disorders, patients on anticoagulant treatment or severely immunocompromised patients.
  • Pregnancy, lactation.
