Pharmacokinetics

Rapid and well absorbed from GI tract, 99% protein binding and excreted via urine.

Actions

Dosage/Dosage form

  • 20 mg/day in the morning for hypertension
  • 40 mg/day in the morning, dose will be reduces to 20 mg as needed for edema. Maximum dose is 80 mg.

Therapeutic uses

Hypertension, oedema.

Adverse effects/Side effects

GI disturbances; hypokalaemia; hyperuricaemia; nocturia, dizziness; impaired glucose metabolism.

Interaction

  • Antihypertensives enhance BP-lowering effects of xipamide. Increased risk of hypokalaemia with amphotericin B, carbenoxolone.
  • Propensity to cause hypokalaemia can increase risk of digitalis toxicity.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to sulphonamide. Precomatose states associated with cirrhosis; Untreated Addison's disease, severe electrolyte deficiency; severe renal failure; lactation.
